How is it that siblings(兄弟姐妹) can turn out so differentlyOne answer is that in fact each sibling grows up in a_different family. The firstborn isfor a whilean only childand therefore has a completely different experience of the parents than those born later. The next child isfor a whilethe youngestuntil the situation is changed by a new arrival. The mother and father themselves are changing and growing up too. One sibling might live in a stable and close family in the first few yearsanother might be raised in a family crisiswith a disappointed mother or an angry father.

Sibling competition was identified as an important shaping force as early as in 1918. But more recentlyresearchers have found many ways in which brothers and sisters are a lasting force in each others’ lives. Dr. Annette Henderson says firstborn children pick up vocabulary more quickly than their siblings. The reason for this might be that the later children aren’t getting the same one?on?one time with parents. But that doesn’t mean that the younger children have problems with language development. Later?borns don’t enjoy that much talking time with parentsbut instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisterslearning entire phrases and getting an understanding of social concepts such as the difference between “I” and “me”

A Cambridge University study of 140 children found that siblings created a rich world of play that helped them grow socially. Love?hate relationships were common among the children. Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.

One way children seek more attention from parents is by making themselves different from their siblingsparticularly if they are close in age. Researchers have found that the first two children in a family are typically more different from each other than the second and third. Girls with brothers show their differences to a maximum degree by being more feminine than girls with sisters. A 2003 research paper studied adolescents from 185 families over two yearsfinding that those who changed to make themselves different from their siblings were successful in increasing the amount of warmth they gained from their parents.

1. The underlined part “in a different family” (in Para.1) means “        (A)

Ain a different family environment  Bin a different family tradition

Cin different family crises         Din different families

根据第一段第三、四句“The firstborn isfor a whilean only child...The next child isfor a whilethe youngest...”可知,这里指的是同一个家庭,在不同时期的家庭环境,所以选A项。

2. In terms of language developmentlater?borns         . (B)

Aget their parents’ individual guidance Blearn a lot from their elder siblings

Cexperience a lot of difficulties      Dpick up words more quickly

根据第二段最后一句中的“...but instead they harvest lessons from bigger brothers and sisters...”可知,他们从大哥哥大姐姐那里学习。所以选B项。

3. What was found about fights among siblings?   (D)

ASiblings hated fighting and loved playing.

BSiblings in some families fought frequently.

CSibling fights led to bad sibling relationships.

DSiblings learned to get on together from fights.

根据第三段最后一句“Even those siblings who fought the most had just as much positive communication as the other sibling pairs.”可知选D项。

4. The word “feminine” (in Para.4) means “        (B)

Ahaving qualities of parents  Bhaving qualities of women

Chaving defensive qualities  Dhaving extraordinary qualities

B

The baby monkey is much more developed at birth than the human baby. Almost from the moment it is bornthe baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother. During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warmand soft object in its environmentparticularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, howeverthe baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attention on “mother”— the real mother or the mother-substitute.

During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological  thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologistsdiscovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes — one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperaturethe little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. Howeverif the wire model was heatedwhile the cloth model was coolfor the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother.

Why is cloth preferable to bare wireSomething that the Harlows called contact comfort seems to be the answerand a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire doesn’t “rub” as well as does soft cloth. Prolonged “contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.

According to the Harlowsthe basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its motherthe baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a furry little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroomthe baby rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfortit obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toysbut often rushes back for a deep embrace as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding onto its “mother”.

1. Psychologicallywhat does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?

A. Warmth.  B. Milk.   C. Contact.  D. Trust.

2. After the first two weeks of their lifebaby monkeys prefer the cloth mother to the wire mother because the former is ________.

A. larger in size                    B. closer to them

C. less frightening and less disturbing  D. more comfortable to rub against

3. What does the baby monkey probably gain from prolonged “contact comfort”

A. Attention.              B. Softness.                C. Confidence.   D. Interest.

4. It can be inferred that when the baby monkey feels secure________.

A. it frequently rushed back for a deep embrace when exploring the toys

B. it spends more time screaming to get rewards

C. it is less attracted to the toys though they are interesting

D. it cares less about whether its mother is still around

5. The main purpose of the passage is to ________.

A. give the reasons for the experiment              B. present the findings of the experiment

C. introduce the method of the experiment        D. describe the process of the experiment

1. A。根据第二段第一句“During the first two weeks of its life warmth is perhaps the most important psychological(心理的) thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby.”可知。考生易误选B项,但题目要求是Psychologically(就心理而言)milk就不对了。

2. D。根据文章第三段第五句“Wire doesn’t ‘rub’ as well as does soft cloth.”知选D项。

3. C。根据第三段最后一句中的“...to give the babies confidence...”可知。

4 .D。根据文章最后一段最后一句可知。一旦小猴子感觉安全了,就很少再关心妈妈是否在周围了。

5. B。写作意图题。很显然此文就是为了给我们展示他们试验的结果。

三.任务型阅读

In the United Statesengineering is a profession that has been dominated historically by men. Even todayit’s still true that few women become civil or chemical or mechanical engineersbut that’s something www.EngineerGirl.org aims to change. Young women who visit the website can find out about a great career choice they might not have considered.

“Women are very much underrepresented in engineering and in engineering education programs and then of coursedown the roadin the engineering workforce. So only about 20 percent of engineering undergraduate degrees go to womenand then only about nine percent of working engineers are women.”

Mary Mattis in the National Academy of Engineeringsays the EngineerGirl website aims to reach young women around ages 11 through 14when they are just getting old enough to start thinking about their futures.

“We know from the research that middle?school girls are at a critical point in their livesand that it’s a time when we need to reach themboth with an understandingincreasing their awareness of interesting fields in engineeringwhat a wonderful productive and exciting career you can have as an engineer. But we also need to reach them at that time because you have to take certain coursesand you can’t start thinking about taking those courses when you’re a junior in high school.”

Engineering is a demanding course of study—there is a lot of science and mathematicsfor many girls and even boysthat can be challenging. But Ms. Mattis says that the EngineerGirl website stresses that engineering can also be fun and exciting.

“It’s about designing things. It’s about changing the world for people. It’s about making a difference. Andin additionyou can make a good livingyou can be independent economically by becoming an engineer. All of those things are messages that girls need to get.”

While most engineers go into traditional fields such as mechanical and electrical engineeringthe Engineer Girl site also highlights unusual engineering careers in fields such as sports engineering and—believe it or not—chocolate engineering.

“There’s a section called ‘why be an engineer,’ and that talks about the many opportunities and increasingly different opportunities like bio?engineering and environmental engineeringsome fields that might appeal to girls who want to make a difference or have a meaning for their careers beyond earning an income.”

Even if you are not a girl in the target age groupthere’s a lot of interesting information on the siteincluding biographies of some notable women engineers.

四.写作 读下面的短文,写一篇150字的文章。

Diamonds were discovered in abundance on the continent of Africa. A farmer who was crazy about diamonds sold his farm to head out to the diamond line. He wandered all over the continent, as the years slipped by, wealth, which he never found.

Meanwhile, the new owner of this farm picked up an unusual looking rock about the size of an egg. A visitor stopped by and in viewing the rock practically went into terminal convulsions. He told the new owner that the funny looking rock was about the biggest diamond that had ever been found. The new owner said, “Heck, the whole farm is covered with them.”

The farm turned out to be the Kimberly Diamond Min. The original farmer was literally standing on “acres of diamonds” until he sold his farm. Each of us is right in the middle of our own “acres of diamonds”, if only we would realize it and develop the ground we are standing on. Opportunity does not just come along----it is there all the time----we just have to see it.

写作要求:

1. 用约30个字概括上文

2. 用约120个字发表自己的观点(陈述你的观点并进行论证)

3. 不能照抄原文的句子

参考范文:

People tend to lose the opportunities around themselves while persuing wealth, which is proved by the farmer in Africa who sold his diamond-covered farm to look for diamonds elsewhere.

Now it is a pity that so many people don’t value the things they have until they lost them. They are so attentive about what others are doing without studying at the circumstances around themselves. Really when you make a conscious effort, you will find opportunities around yourself for you to achieve your goal. No matter what you do, you should try your best. What’s more important, you should do it in the right direction. Otherwise you will make a wrong decision.

As we all know, foolish persons wait for opportunities while wise ones try to find opportunities to achieve success. Everyone will have his “acres of diamonds”, if he or she is good at realizing it. Once you miss a chance, especially a chance around yourself, you will wait for years.
