二.阅读理解

Each year before Thanksgiving, the president of the United States formally pardons (赦免) a live turkey (火鸡). It’s been a tradition since the 1940s.  A lot of people point to Harry Truman as pardoning the first turkey in 1947, but the record keepers at the Truman Library can’t find any “documents, or other records” tying Truman to the custom. What’s more, the first turkey Truman supposedly pardoned wasn’t even for Thanksgiving — it was given to him at Christmas. The Truman family ate it.

Another origin story says that Abraham Lincoln interrupted a meeting in 1863 to pardon a turkey named Jack, which his son had raised, giving an order of giving it free, though there’s no evidence to support the story, and it may be just another Lincoln tale.

The first president after Truman to spare a turkey was John F. Kennedy. But JFK did not give a formal “pardon” to the bird the week before Thanksgiving in 1963. He simply suggested to the family “just keep him” and announced he would not eat the bird. According to a New York Times report, the bird was returned to a farm for breeding. Kennedy tragically (悲剧地) didn’t live to see Thanksgiving — he was murdered on November 22.

Ronald Reagan spared a turkey named Charlie from the White House kitchen. Formal turkey pardoning has only been around since 1989, when President George H.W. Bush looked at his turkey and said, “Let me assure this fine tom (雄火鸡) will not end up on anyone’s dinner table. Not this guy. He’s been granted a presidential pardon from now on, allowing him to live out his days on a farm not far from here.”

Since 1989, the tradition has been continued and the president pardoned a turkey each year. Until 2004, the spared turkeys were sent to Kidwell Farm in Virginia. From 2005 to 2009, the turkeys went to either Disneyland in California or Disney World in Florida. In 2010, Disney stopped taking pardoned turkeys and President Obama’s birds were sent to the first president, George Washington’s Mount Vernon Estate in Virginia.

1. How many presidents once pardoned a turkey according to this passage?

     B. would be for sale by a boy’s name

     C. would be shown in different places

How many times a day do you make wishes? Once or twice? Half a dozen or more? Maybe you’re not constantly saying, “I wish I had a million dollars!” But you might wish that your parents would stop arguing, or that you hadn’t just eaten that terrible meal at the restaurant. Most of us wish constantly for one thing or another. And we don’t really expect or try to make them come true.

The new movie Shorts, written and directed by Robert Rodriguez, takes a look at what might happen if people’s wishes could be granted (准予) instantly. In the movie, when a mysterious “wishing rock” appears in Toby Thompson’s neighborhood, chaos happens one after another. The chaos is funny and strange, yet also hits close to home; it’s this kind of chaos that even your parents or kids will chuckle (轻声地笑) at.

In addition to the comedy, cool visuals and great actors, we like how the story touches on some bigger issues such as family relationships, the role of technology in our lives. Most of the characters make their first wishing rock request (请求) by expressing their deepest desires. Lonely Toby wishes for friends as unique as he is; Helvetica wishes her dad would listen to her; Nose wishes his father’s inventions would work; and Toby’s mom wishes she and her husband were closer instead of texting each other while they’re in the same room! It’s these wishes that the heart of Shorts consists of.

But it sure is fun to come out of this movie and talk to a friend, a parent, or whoever about what you would do with the “wishing rock”. Would you go for the instant satisfaction? Would you wish for something for yourself, or for others?

5. Why does the author mention wishes at the beginning of the passage?

     A. To explain why people make wishes.

     B. To introduce a movie Shorts.

     C. To stress the importance of making wishes.

     D. To show the frequency (频率) of people’s making wishes.

6. What can we infer from this passage?

     A. The movie is intended for children.

     B. The movie will bring in a huge profit.

     C. The movie will appeal to people of all ages.

     D. Many modern technologies are used in the movie.

7. According to the passage, what unusual advantage does the “wishing rock” have?

     A. The rock can bring people luck.

     B. The rock can make people become rich.

     C. The rock can help people realize their wishes.

     D. The rock can have people express their deepest desires.

三.   任务型阅读

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Blood is one of the important components of the human body. About seven to eight percent of the weight of the human body is made up of blood. A healthy adult with a body weight of 60 kilograms has approximately 4.2 to 4.8 liters of blood. So the body weight is one of the factors (因素) that determine the quantity of blood in the human body. Other factors include age, gender, and health condition. Usually, females are found to have slightly lesser amount of blood, as compared with males. Adults have more blood than kids. When compared with those living in low altitudes (海拔高度), people living in high altitudes have more blood in their bodies. There is less atmospheric oxygen at high altitudes, so people living in such places have more blood to feed the body cells with enough oxygen.

There are various medical conditions, which cause blood loss. It may happen due to other reasons, like operations. Such conditions make a blood volume (血容量) test necessary, so that the amount of blood and red blood cells in the body can be determined. This test is helpful in evaluating the condition of people having high blood pressure, heart failure, etc. However, though it is very rare, the test may sometimes result in severe allergic (过敏的) reactions.

How much blood is needed in order to survive? Generally speaking, the amount of blood in a human body is around 5 liters and this may drop due to certain medical conditions, operations, injuries, etc. It is said that a blood loss of up to 15 percent of the total amount can be tolerated by a healthy adult, without any serious signs and symptoms. However, blood loss beyond this limit can cause serious symptoms and complications, if immediate medical attention isn’t sought. An average person can lose a maximum of 30 to 40 percent of the total blood volume and stay alive, if he is given immediate treatment.

Blood carries out many important functions in the body, like transporting nutrients and oxygen to the body cells. It also takes away the waste materials from the cells. It also plays a very important role in keeping the body temperature steady by transporting excess body heat to the skin. Blood is an important component of the immune system, as it contains white blood cells which attack the foreign materials that enter the body. The platelets (血小板) in blood can stop bleeding from wounds and other injuries.

四.写作

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Nowadays, the Internet has become part of people’s life, and millions of young people have made friends online. Making friends on the Internet sounds curious and interesting. You don’t know where they are. And most of all, they have no relation with you, so you can talk with them about anything.

However, making friends on the Internet may have a bad influence on you. Let’s read the following story.

Bill, Hillary’s brother, is a rude and impolite boy. So everyone in his school doesn’t like him. However, he really wants to have a friend, so he asks Hillary to help him. Then Hillary pretended to be Bill on the Internet and met a nice girl, Monica. Three months later, Hillary asked Monica to go out with “Bill” (her brother), and arranged everything for them. When they met each other at McDonald’s, Monica found that Bill wasn’t the one whom she talked to on the Internet. Then she ran away and never met him again.

Finally, Monica understood that it was very dangerous to trust her net-friends and date with them. And we all should be very careful on the Internet.

(2) 谈谈你对网上交友的看法;

(3) 网上交友时如何注意安全?

【写作要求】

1. 作文中可以使用自己亲身的经历或虚构的故事,也可以参照阅读材料的内容,但不得直接引用原文中的句子;

2. 作文中不能出现真实姓名和学校名称。

By telling a story between Bill, Hillary and Monica, the author wants to tell us that while it’s exciting and interesting to make friends on the Internet, it can also be very dangerous. Therefore, he advises us to be careful to make friends on the Internet.

Why do millions of people, especially young people, make friends online? There are some reasons contributing to this. Firstly, communication tools like MSN or QQ make people contact with each other conveniently and extensively. Secondly, people can make acquaintance with cyber friends from English-speaking countries and practice their English. Thirdly, admittedly, making friends online brings people a great amount of joy and unimaginable stimulating experience.

As for me, I don’t think it very wise to make friends online. Anyway, net communication can never take the place of the face-to-face talk. In addition, teenagers are easily getting addicted to this kind of fictitious relationship and finally lose the ability of surviving in real living environments.

When making friends online, it is necessary to be sensible and take precautions to ensure our safety. For example, we can be accompanied by one friend or someone else when meeting net friends outside. Only in this way can we enjoy the exciting experience and extreme convenience the net brings to us.
