The 2012 Olympic Games—A look ahead to London

When London hosts the Games of the 30th Olympics from July 27 to August 12, 2012, it will become the first city to host the Olympics three times (Athens and Paris have hosted the Summer Olympic Games twice, and Lake Placid and St. Moritzhave held the Winter Olympic Games twice.)

London hosted the Olympic Games in 1908 and 1948, and both Games played an important role in the development of the modern Olympic Movement. London’s first Olympics, held just 12 years after the first modern Olympics, set a new standard for host cities. In 1948, London was the site of the Olympics’ revival (复苏) after a 12-year absence because of World War II.

Tennis will be played on Wimbledon’s famous lawns (草坪), soccer at the Wembley Stadium. Beach volleyball will be held at the Horse Guards Parade. Hyde Park, which has a history of 400 years, will host triathlon (三项全能运动).

London’s Olympic Park in the East End is the largest urban development in more than a century. The Olympic Park will be the site of the new 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, which will host track and field and the opening and closing ceremonies. The Stadium is on an “island” site—surrounded by waterways. Spectators will be able to reach it by five bridges.

The sports program itself will have two famous absences from the Beijing Olympic Games, as baseball and softball have been dropped from the Olympic list. Spectators will watch the women’s boxing for the first time. In Beijing, there were seven track cycling events for men and three for women; men and women each will have five track cycling events in London. Also, tennis has added a mixed doubles competition.

Yosemite Park is one of the most beautiful locations in the United States. As a national park that covers over 1,100 miles of land, it stretches across the western slopes (斜坡) of the Sierra Nevada mountains. So it supports a wide variety ofbiological diversity (生物多样性).

When you explore Yosemite, it’s important to understand that you will see all sorts of wildlife, perhaps even some of the more exotic (外来的) if you’re lucky. If you’re the type of person who loves camping and being outdoors, go on an overnight or several days’ backpacking trip, hike up to the falls, try out some rock climbing, go biking and generally enjoy the amazing beauty of Yosemite.

If you’re a person who doesn’t really like nature or enjoys it from a distance, Yosemite still offers many great opportunities. Stay in the luxurious Yosemite hotel and walk to the neighboring village to try an ice skate. Check out the mall museum and go on several guided tours.

Some must-see places in Yosemite include: El Capitan, one of the most famous rock-climbing areas in the world; Yosemite Falls, easily the highest waterfall in North America at 2,425 ft; Ribbon Falls, the longest single-drop water fall in the US at 1,612 ft.; Mount Lyell, the highest point in the park, and many other amazing sights.

Thus Yosemite truly has something for every-one. If you have a chance, it’s worth a visit any season, but events like swimming and boating are only available late spring through summer. In the winter, there’s cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and snowshoeing. So fun activities are always available to all.

5. What can we learn from the second paragraph?

     A. Yosemite Park is the most beautiful park in the US.

任务型阅读  请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。注意:每空格1个单词。

It’s difficult to quit smoking, but it’s not impossible and actually you can quit smoking naturally. For this, remind yourself that smoking harms health. Think about all the people who love you and who feel sad when you smoke. You will give up smoking if you want to. Think about what happens when you smoke a cigarette. Imagine the damage you cause to your organs inside and the environment.

Take part in the activities in which you have to breathe deeply. This can be exercising in the gym, taking a walk around the neighborhood, and even swimming for about an hour. You can also sit and meditate (冥想) and take deep breaths, and just remember you need to get your lungs fresh air. When you avoid smoking and plan to stay clean by breathing exercises, the fresh oxygen will help purify the blood and help the lungs get rid of all theimpurities (杂质).

Most smokers are thin because the smoke that they breathe in takes in the most important nutrients (营养) and makes them weak. The good news is that when you stop smoking, you might increase some pounds. Don’t feel bad, for it is good to have food in your stomach instead of smoke. Eating healthy food will nourish (滋养) your body and it’s one of the best ways to quit smoking naturally. Eating doesn’t harm anyone and it keeps the environment clean and if your foods are healthy, it doesn’t harm your body.

If you want to get rid of smoking, get yourself occupied with some useful activities. People smoke when they have the time to smoke. The busier you are, the less you’ll think of smoking. Go to some hobby classes or spend more time with your friends and loved ones.

Remember smokers cut their lives shorter by 15 years. If you love life and want to achieve something meaningful, then quitting smoking will help you remain healthy and alive for many years. You can also join a support group and share your experiences, and your words can serve as encouragement to others as well as yourself to give up smoking.

The human nose has given to the languages of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyrano de Bergerac said that a large nose showed a

A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, made an interesting comment(评论) about Cleopatra’s nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world!

Historically, man’s nose has had a principal role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concerning the nose refer to human weakness: anger, pride, jealousy and revenge (报复).

In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, to hold up one’s nose, expresses a basic human feeling—pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things, and places.

The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.

For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase, to have one’s nose put out of joint, is very descriptive(形象生动). The expression applies to persons who have been turned aside because of a competitor(对手). Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.

This is only a sampling(抽样) of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than an organ for breathing and smelling!

18. A person who has nose put out of joint feels______________.

A. hurt and unaccepted             B. pleased

C. ill                            D. proud and happy

19. What does the last sentence of this passage mean?

B. It is very hard to know that the nose is not only for smelling.

C. It is very obvious (明白的) that the nose’s function(功能)is more than breathing and smelling.

D. It is so strange that nose has other functions except these two.

At Harton College, an English boarding school(寄宿学校) for boys, there are many rules. Fifteen-year-old Bob Sanders often breaks these rules.

The boys can go into the town in the afternoon after classes, but they must return to the school at six o’clock. One afternoon Bob walked to the town. He looked at the shops and then went to the cinema. After the film, he looked at his watch. It was after eight o'clock. He was a little worried. He walked back to Harton College as fast as possible.

When he arrived, he ran quickly to the main entrance. It was locked. He went round the school building to another door. That one was on the third floor. The window was open. Then someone turned on a light in the corridor. Bob looked around and then hid under the sofa. One minute later, Mr. Mannering, the headmaster, came in.    Mr. Mannering read his book for another hour. Finally, the headmaster closed his book and stood up. He put the book on a shelf and walked towards the door.

“Thank heavens he did not find me under the sofa!” thought Bob.

Then Mr. Mannering stopped and spoke towards the sofa.

“Would you turn off the light when you leave?” he said and left the study.
