The Old Town of Lijiang, situated in the south-east of Yunnan, is an intact ancient city inhabited mostly by Naxi ethnic people and covers an area of 1.5 square kilometers. The Old Town of Lijiang was first built in Southern Song Dynasty. In Ming and Qing dynasties, it became much larger. Lijiang is worldfamous as an ancient city built in a simple and artistic style and scientifically laid out. There is a square in its center. It was listed as a national historical and cultural city in 1986.

The Old Town of Lijiang is surrounded by Lion Mountain in the west and by Elephant and Golden Row Mountains in the north. These mountains in the northwest shelter it from the cold wind. In the southeast, there are fertile fields, which are dozens of kilometers long. The city is favored with plentiful sunlight, an east wind and clear spring water which flows in three streams and reaches every family. The streets are paved with the local stone slabs, which do not get muddy in the rainy season and are free of dust in the dry season. Many stone bridges and arches in the city were built during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Orderly roads and lanes extend to four directions from the central square. Residential houses are made of timber; most have a courtyard. Local people plant flowers in their courtyards. The ancient traditional culture of the Naxi ethnic group is the Dongba culture, which is based on the Dongba religion. Most believers are skilled in medicine and the culture is passed on through literature and art.

Lijiang has many historical relics. The Old Town of Lijiang is the most complete ancient town in China. Black Dragon Pool, Wufeng Building and Lijiang mural paintings(壁画) are very famous in China. There are many traditional festivals for Naxi people, such as Sandu Festival, Torch Festival and Stick Festival, etc. The most delicious traditional food is called Lijiang round cake. As a child I used to sing after my primary school teachers:High Xingan mountain, an immense piece of forest… Before my eyes appeared white snow, sky-piercing trees and the chilly north wind. I came to grow up in the singing of the song and it’s then that I began to understand from the bottom of my heart the North-east China, Xingan and Changbai Mountains. The North-east China once lived through the misfortunes in recent history, experienced the gunfires of Liberation War, witnessed the rising of the heavy industry in New China. With the realization of reform and open-up to outside world policy, an attractive flower has come out in full bloom at the foot of high Changbai Mountain.

Nowadays Changbai Mountain is just a destiny-like thread, bringing masses of students together. More than ten years ago, an energetic fellow in Northeast China, carrying the bag of promoting English-teaching in China on his back, turned onto the road. He’s Mr Bao Tianren, one who is engaged in English-teaching in China, a great lover of Chinese language as well. With his help and support, English Coaching Paper came into being on March 1st,1990, and it’s the only kind of English paper in Northeast China with the aim of building up the relation between her readers and herself face to face. Showing no fear on the winding roads around the Xingan and Changbai Mountain, he stepped forward firmly and strongly. He looks upon English-teaching in China as his own duty. Step by step his efforts have made English Coaching Paper the most attractive flower in the world of English language from the very beginning. A year later, a weighty magazine in China College English made the following comments:Within a short period of one year, English Coaching Paper regards the quality as her own life with the social benefit as her starting-point. She has smoothed away all sorts of difficulties and united masses of English writers around her body, making her popular with lots of teachers and students. English Coaching Paper has won praises from experts as well as teachers and students.(from the second issue of College English in 1991) In the past ten years ,in order to find new ways in English-teaching in China, Mr Bao Tianren has visited several western countries for the purpose of getting new blood in English-teaching. To improve English-teaching level in China, Mr Bao, director of English Coaching Paper, goes from place to place in China in hope of disseminating advanced theories for English-teaching. The thought how to better the service from English Coaching Paper has cost Mr Bao quite a few sleepless nights. The past ten years have been filled with winds and rains, and English Coaching Paper has all the time undertaken the historic task of English teaching & research. She has helped to train groups of promising teachers. She has also supported several items between China and other English-speaking countries. Her loving arms and rich contents have resulted in colourful lives of many teachers and students. IATEFL, with the help of English Coaching Paper, has made China’s English-teaching mixed with the world trend.

English Coaching Paper, an attractive flower at the foot of Changbai Mountain! With Director Bao’s assistance, may you bloom more vigorously! Your sweetness is like a strong force, which will contribute to the education in our great motherland.

After a few days of travel, we’ve finally arrived at the ruins of the ancient Loulan Kingdom lying in the deserts. To me, it was the first time to see some mural paintings in Loulan Kingdom. Although I was not a little tired, I was glad to have the chance to know more about this mysterious city.

Loulan Kingdom, once a small, wealthy commercial city, existed almost 2000 years ago. It was a stopping point on the famous Silk Road between the East and West. It is said that the old city had been gradually covered over by sandstorms from 200 AD to 500 AD. I found the ruins very interesting. There was an ancient water system which ran through the middle of the city. The desert was once a green land!

What an exciting day it is today!

When thousands of boys and girls performed tai chi during the spectacular opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics, it opened the world’s eyes to China’s dazzling martial arts.

Tai chi, China’s homegrown martial arts that goes back 3000 years, is now competing with yoga and going to a gym as the activity of choice for many today. Its followers include many foreigners in China. It is said that tai chi maybe the easiest Chinese martial arts for foreigners to learn.

The art of tai chi is one of China’s greatest gifts to the world and if practiced correctly, offers extensive health benefits. It can be practiced by people of any age and doesn’t require a large amount of space or any special tools. The key to learn tai chi is to keep the spine as the pivot on which the body moves. Energy is generated from the spine and waist to the arms and legs. The inner strength and energy is channeled through the external movements.

The movements of tai chi are relaxed and slow. They call for stillness in motion to relax the mind and body. At the same time, there must be motion in stillness so that the movements are not discontinuous and the energy flow is not interrupted. Motion and stillness are opposites, but they come together harmoniously in tai chi.

Tai chi also combines the hard and the soft. Tai chi stresses softness to achieve hardness. But too much hardness means breakage while too much softness means easy damage. In executing the movements, the softness is implied while the hardness is shown in form.

Tai chi illustrates perfectly the Chinese philosophy of seeking harmony and balance.

Pick out the correct answer for each blank:

6. For what is Tai chi popular at home and abroad?

  A. Tai chi can be practiced by people of any age.

  B. Playing tai chi doesn’t require any special tools.

  C. People can practice tai chi in small space.

  D. All the above.

7. Which of the following is not true according to the passage?

  A. From time to time the movements of tai chi are quick and strong.

  B. Tai chi combines stillness and motion in movements.

  C. Tai chi is the best sport for old people.

  D. Foreigners in China think highly of tai chi and they also practice it.

You don’t have to look very far to find out why the official reactions are blind to medical findings about smoking. The answer is simply money. Tobacco is a wonderful commodity to tax. It’s almost like a tax on our daily bread. In tax revenue alone, the government of Britain collects enough from smokers to pay for its entire educational facilities. So while the authorities point out ever so discreetly that smoking may, conceivable, be harmful, it doesn’t do to shout too loudly about it.

This is surely the most short-sighted policy you could imagine. While money is eagerly collected in vast sums with one hand, it is paid out in increasingly vaster sums with the other. Enormous amounts are spent on cancer research and on efforts to cure people suffering from the disease. Countless valuable lives are lost. In the long run, there is no doubt that everybody would be much better-off if smoking were banned altogether.

If the governments of the world were honestly concerned about the welfare of their peoples, you’d think they’d conduct aggressive anti-smoking campaigns. Far from it! The tobacco industry is allowed to spend staggering sums on advertising. Its advertising is as insidious as it is dishonest. We are never shown pictures of real smokers coughing up their lungs early in the morning. That would never do. The advertisement suggests it is manly to smoke, even positively healthy! Smoking is associated with the great open-air life, with beautiful girls, true love and togetherness. What utter nonsense!

For a start, governments could begin by banning all cigarette and tobacco advertising and should then conduct anti-smoking advertising campaigns of their own. Smoking should be banned in all public places like theatres, cinemas and restaurants. Great efforts should be made to inform young people especially of the dire consequences of taking up the habit. A horrific warning – say, a picture of a death’s head – should be included in every packet of cigarettes that is sold. As individuals, we are certainly weak, but if governments acted honestly and courageously, they could protect us from ourselves.

8. Which of the following is right according to the passage?

  A. Few governments take measures toward smoking because they are afraid of people.

B. Few governments take measures toward smoking because diseases cost a lot.

C. Few governments take measures toward smoking because they are afraid of the cutting down of their revenue(财政收入).

  D. Few governments take measures toward smoking because they are afraid of manufacturers.

9. The writer’s attitude to smoking-banning is ______.

A. critical        B. ironical        C. dishonest          D. amusing

10. What is the best title of this passage?

A. World Governments should conduct serious campaigns against smoking.

B. World governments take measures against smoking.

C. Smoking is the most important source of income to many countries.

D. Tobacco industry spends a large sum of money on medical research.

(He who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man.)。”

我自豪我到过长城,我是一位好汉。

One possible version:

I was happy to be picked to represent American middle school students to win a place on this trip. I enjoyed my one-year stay in China. To my pride, I once stood on top of the Great Wall, one of Seven Wonders in the world, which is regarded as the old civilization existing in the world now.

The Great Wall, called in Chinese “The Ten-Thousand-li Great Wall”, is actually more than 6000 kilometers long. During the time when Rome became a republic, there was much confusion and fighting between the kingdoms which ruled the different parts of China. These kingdoms put up many walls to defend their borders. In 221 B.C., Emperor Qinshihuang united China. To keep the enemy out of his country, Emperor Qinshihuang had all the walls joined up. Thus the Great Wall was built. In the years that followed up to now, the Great Wall has been added to for many times.

Today the Great Wall has become a place of interest not only to the Chinese people, but also to people from all over the world. Many of them know the famous Chinese saying: “He who doesn’t reach the Great Wall is not a true man.”

I am proud that I have come to the Great Wall and of being a true man.
