Situated in northeast Hebei Province, 250 kilometers from Beijing, Chengde covers an area of 4442 square meters. Surrounded by mountains and with brooks and streams running through the city, Chengde commands beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate. Here the Chengde Mountain Resort of classic beauty and elegant taste, the grand “Eight Outer Temples” and the strange hills and crags combine to make Chengde a city of scenic and historical interest with a special and rational layout, as well as a tourist attraction famous both at home and abroad.

Chengde has been a summer get-away for Beijingers for several centuries. The Qing emperors with full retinue used to escape here when things got too hot in the capital, and made sure they would suffer no inconvenience in the change of location by having built a complex of palaces, temples and gardens that rivaled those in Beijing in the grandeur. The main palace and garden, called Mountain Resort, covers an area of 564 square meters, almost half of Chengde’s urban area, enclosed by a 10-kilometer wall. Construction began in 1703 during the rule of Emperor Kangxi and was completed in 1790, in time for Emperor Qianlong to enjoy it. There are more than 100 buildings within the resort, which is divided into the palace area and garden area. On the hills that surround Chengde were 11 temples only seven of which remain intact. These include Puren (Universal Humanity) Temple, Sumeru (Happiness and Longevity) Temple and Puning (Universal Tranquility) Temple. Together they comprise the largest temple building complex existing in China.

1. Chengde lies in ______ of Hebei Province.

      A. the northeast     B. northwest       C. west      D. the southeast

2. For a rather long time Beijingers came to Chengde just to ______.

A. spend their holidays         B. have a good look at Chengde

C. escape from the hot weather   D. show their respect to Emperor Qianlong

3. Which of the following is right according to the passage?

A. Chengde Mountain Resort came into being during the rule of Emperor Kangxi.

B. Construction of Chengde Mountain Resort began in 1703.

C. Chengde Mountain Resort was finished in 1780.

D. There are less than 100 buildings within the Chengde Mountain Resort.

4. The Chengde Mountain Resort is made up of _____.

     A. the palace area and garden area       B. the palace area and the temple area

     C. the temple and garden area      D. the mansion area and garden area

5. Puren (Universal Humanity) Temple is one of the largest ______existing in China.

The investment banker said Sony's PS3 is an impressive machine, but the costly components inside could raise the price of a PS3 to around $500 (£280) when it launches in the spring of 2006. By then, the Xbox 360 could be selling for US$249 (£140), Merrill Lynch estimated.

Sony could not be reached for comment due to a public holiday in Japan.

Microsoft has announced two versions of the Xbox 360, a basic version for $300 (£170) and a premium edition for $400 (£225).

The lower cost could put as many as 10 million Xbox 360 game machines into users' hands by the end of 2006, said Merrill Lynch.

"As volumes ramp up, Microsoft should see an improved ability to lower hardware costs," said Merrill Lynch, making the Xbox 360 an even better deal for users. It would also encourage game developers to put their latest titles out more quickly, to capture the huge audience.

The biggest cost issue for the PS3 is the Cell processor, Merrill Lynch said. Although Sony hopes the new microprocessor architecture could find its way into many new products beyond just the PS3, thereby lowering its per chip cost, Merrill Lynch believes the Cell won't gain much ground in other markets.

"Processor architectures have been in consolidation mode for the last 5 years, and we think it's going to be difficult for Sony to find takers for Cell outside of the PS3," the investment banking firm said.

One recent example of such consolidation was Apple's June decision to move its Macintosh computers to Intel processors by the end of 2007. The computer maker has been using PowerPC chips developed by IBM and Freescale for the past decade.

Heavy research costs and expensive manufacturing could cause the Cell to cost about $160 (£90) per chip initially, Merrill Lynch said, compared to the $100 (£56) for the PowerPC chips used in the Xbox 360.

The Blu-ray drive planned for the PS3 will also add about a $75 (£40) cost disadvantage, Merrill Lynch said, compared to the DVD-ROM drive Microsoft plans to install in the Xbox 360.

Merrill Lynch also highlighted Sony's weaker financial situation compared to the strong position at Microsoft.

"All of this might not matter were Sony in a position to take large losses on the PS3, but the company's financial situation raises questions about just how much money Sony is going to be willing to lose," the investment firm said.

Meanwhile, Microsoft has a less expensive game console and likely a six-month lead over the PS3 in getting to market, Merrill Lynch said. Microsoft plans to launch the Xbox 360 on November 22 in the U.S., followed by Europe on December 2 and Japan on December 10.

1. Sony's PS3 will go up a little when it touches the markets in the spring of 2006 just because _____.

A. Sony’s PS3 is an impressive machine

B. there is a great demand for Sony's PS3 from the markets

C. Sony's weaker financial situation has an effect on Sony's weaker financial situation

D. much money is spent in the making of the machine

2. According to Merrill Lynch, which of the following is right?

A. Microsoft should see an improved ability to lower hardware costs because of a great market.

B. Because the Xbox 360 is made in a big size, there will be a chance for Microsoft to lower hardware costs.

C. Heavy research costs and expensive manufacturing will cause Microsoft to lower hardware costs.

D. Microsoft should see an improved ability to lower hardware costs as the result of a big memory of the Xbox 360.

3. For what reason is Microsoft likely to plan to launch the Xbox 360 on November 22 in the U.S.?

A. Sony is in a position to take large losses on the PS3.

B. Microsoft is in the strong financial situation.

C. Microsoft has a game machine which is advantageous over the PS3.

D. Microsoft enjoys the best PS3 for the Xbox 360.

1—3DDC

1.“the costly components inside could raise the price of a PS3 to around $500…”可推断到答案,故D为正确答案。2.Volumes指的是the Xbox 360的容量,也就是储存器的容量大,故D为正确答案。3. Microsoft has a less expensive game console and likely a six-month lead over the PS3 in getting to market给出了答案,故C为正确答案。

Do we need an “Ivy League”?

China may soon have its own “Ivy League”, with a union of top universities.

The term originally referred to an athletic conference of eight top universities in the northeastern US. The Chinese version consists of nine famous universities, including Peking, Tsinghua, Zhejiang and Fudan. The union is supposed to result in student exchange programs, recognition of academic achievements, and other joint programs.

The news of this Chinese “Ivy League” has received mixed responses from the public and press. Some negative critics have dismissed it as yet another example of the wishful copying of international practices without fully understanding them. Others say that the “Ivy League” is not necessary but that the union is a good idea, one that could promote academic development.

So what’s your opinion on a Chinese “Ivy League”? Do we need one?

Yes. Nine of China’s best universities cooperating is a good thing.

These universities combining resources could create a better environment for students and for research. It could also save a lot of time and resources because it would mean fewer unnecessary investments for some of the universities.

Allowing students to move to or have exchanges with other universities could broaden their horizons, improve their social skills and create more employment opportunities. The results could be more important than lessons and achievements.

The term “Ivy League” carries a sense of academic excellence, tradition and reputation. If borrowing such a term could encourage students’ and professors’ mental state and improve Chinese higher education, then there’s no reason not to do it.

No. Universities should do some work on increasing cooperation instead of copying an “Ivy League” model.

Many Chinese universities already have such cooperation with each other. If this cooperation were associated with the “Ivy League”, it would just distract attention and resources and have a negative effect.

These Chinese universities are all state-run and most get their funding from the government. They’re quite similar to each other in many ways and more cooperation wouldn’t bring about as much potential ability as between , say, public and private, or Chinese and foreign universities.

China should find its own way to develop world-class universities instead of by copying some foreign practices. We have our own unique conditions and foreign lessons often don’t apply well here.
