关于我

三尺讲台是我的T台。选择了就不后悔,在与教育流氓叫板的呐喊声中像自己手中的粉笔一样,给孩子们描绘美好的未来,自己变成微不足道的粉末。

Recently, Ning Caishen, the famous critic and TV playwright, was arrested for taking drugs. According to him, taking drugs helped his writing because it allowed him to fall into a trance. In such a heaven-like state, his writing would become much more fluent and creative. His answer sparks widespread discussion and controversy. We can’t help but wonder: can drugs really improve artistic performance?

My answer is definitely no. It is true that people who work in the creative industries need a lot of inspirations to beef up their work. However, inspirations don’t have to come from drugs. Life itself is filled with countless aspects of inspirations which we can transform into all sorts of art—literature, music, movies and many more. Taking drugs may be an easier way to success, but we run a great risk as well.

Taking drugs, of course, is an extreme as well as illegal activity. But we have to admit that many artists can’t create wonderful works without drinking a lot and experiencing some ups and downs in their lifetime. Famous poets in ancient China would often chant beautiful poetry after enjoying an exquisite dose of wine; many writers drift from place to place and had more than one romantic relationship. Sometimes life teaches us lessons and leaves us with treasures to cherish, to put into writing and to support our imaginations. Inspirations may need a stimulus in order to blossom and bloom, but we need to be ready to welcome them into our lives and make the best use of them.

When I was in Hong Kong, I met a very accomplished Chinese poet. He told me that he always keeps a notebook with him and he would write down some memorable moments in his life, or the things he sees, or the people he meets.

He said that this activity enables him to understand his own life and the world around him. The realities of life, he said, are the best inspirations for his writings.

Of course, there are times when he could not think of anything to write. At these times, he would stop writing and try to focus on something else. “If you don’t want speedy success, this is a nice way.” He said.

I think I agree with him on this point. Perhaps people like Ning Caishen resorted to drugs because he could not wait—he wanted his works to become a huge hit, as soon as possible. What he failed to see is that there is always time—and even if inspirations don’t come, we can always wait—with grateful heart and hopeful spirits.
